Personal values

How do they integrate with business? How do gender stereotypes play a role?
Reflecting on my first internship at a bank, I was fortunate to have a mentor who guided me through the corporate maze. He emphasized the importance of building a reputation based on integrity and work ethic, and he protected me from potentially harmful influences by my professional networks in that organization. I was a young & naive 21 year old then and I feel fortunate because he stepped in to fiercely guard & guide me. This early guidance helped me understand that who you are, and how you align your actions with your personal values, matters. I’ve carried that principle throughout my career, ensuring that I’m clear about my values from the start of every job or professional set up I step into. This approach has allowed me to thrive in environments where I could remain true to myself.
There is an important question of whether women can succeed purely on merit while maintaining their personal code. The answer, from my experience, is yes – but it requires courage, self-awareness, and sometimes, slower progress. There have been moments where I chose not to engage in practices or situations that didn’t align with my values, even if it meant pacing myself more slowly. Was it frustrating at times? Absolutely. But the peace and confidence I gained by staying true to my convictions have been invaluable. I’ve learned that my peace of mind and a strong conscience are worth more than any shortcut to success. This is core to how I was raised as well. Credit to my amazing parents!
So, my advice since we are not all lucky to stumble on god fathers who fiercely protect us in the organizations; When your value system is under attack, it’s crucial to remember who you are and what grounds you. Reach out to mentors, confidants, or anyone who can offer guidance. Don’t let silence or isolation undermine your integrity. Standing firm in your values can often feel like an uphill battle, but the rewards – authentic relationships, professional fulfillment, and personal peace – are well worth the struggle.
In the end, your values are the foundation for everything meaningful in your life and career. They define who you are and how you navigate the challenges that come your way. Upholding them may not always be easy, but it ensures that you achieve success on your own terms, with your dignity and peace of mind intact.
